German palaeontologists have found remains of nine pairs of copulating turtles at the bottom of Messel Lake, near Frankfurt, from circa 47 millions years ago!
The volcanic lake was apparently safe for swimming, and other funny business, towards the surface. But, due to the volcanic substances at the bottom, which were poisonous, the turtles became so caught up in the moment that they sank while locked together.
Is that what you would call a happy ending?
